VARSITY TENNIS
CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED AUCKLAND WINS CUP After five years in the hands of Canterbury and Otago, the intercollege lawn tennis challenge Cup comes back to Auckland’s mantlepiece. By winning three out of the five events the northerners definitely established their superiority over Otago and Canterbury, which won one championship each. As a result of the tennis, Auckland was able to add four Points to its total for the tournament shield, and thereby win that trophy. Altogether it was a most successful tournament from their point of view. Chisholm, of Otago, proved himself an aggressive player with strength in his forehand drive and overhead. His three sets with Ferkins in the final of the men’s singles were interesting without being spectacular. The Victorian seemed to be tired, and it was only on occasion that he drove with the accuracy and pace of which he is capable. He made an uphill fight. Chisholm getting a runaway lead in each set. The final of the women’s singles showed every sign of being a marathon, both Miss Miller, Auckland, and Miss Witherow, Otago, being wonderfully steady. Rallies from the back line were kepi: up for minutes. The Aucklander was slightly more vigorous and this coupled with Miss Witherow’s weakness overhead, gave the match to Miss Miller. Auckland fought out the final of the women’s doubles with itself, the younger pair, Misses Whitelaw and Brownlee, putting up a good fight against the superior tactics and courtcraft of Misses Miller and Mueller. The second set saw the juniors setting their teeth and going well together at the net. In the third, Miss Brownlee was the most tired of the four and she often failed. The match was finished in a failing light. Knowledge of each other’s play was the great asset of Hubble and Nicholson, Auckland, who defeated Hunter and Smithson, Canterbury, in two sets. This match had much sparkling tennis in it, Hubble’s angled volleys being very effective, while Hunter drove and smashed well, Chisholm played with h:is head and the lobbing of the Canterbury pair failed to have the effect it had in the semi-final. Going straight on after his men’s double, Hunter took the court with Miss Scott aga.inst the Victorians, Ferkins and Miss Shepherd. Canterbury’s bright pair went true to form and easily proved their superiority. The combination was excellent, and the ability of each player at the net was a marked advantage. Miss Shepherd showed a reluctance to leave the bade line. Results of the finals: MEN’S SINGLES Former holder, W. R. Robinson (C.U.C.). Final. F. R. Chisholm (O.) beat R. McL.
