OIL PROSPECTS

INVESTIGATIONS IN THE SOUTH Oil prospects in the Matiri River Valley and the Blackwater Valley are to be investigated shortly by Mr. John A. Spencer, petroleum field engineer. Mr. Spencer has already reported upon the areas held under option by the Murchison Oil Company, Auckland, and on his report a bore is now going down. The first seam of oil was found at 1,200 feet, as predicted in his report, and the conditions are favourable for large oil production. The companies for whom Mr. Spencer is operating are the Reefton Gold Mines, Ltd., Christchurch, for the Matiri Valley, and the Southern Mines Development Company, for the Blackwater Valley.
