GROPING PILOTS
EARLY MORNING FOGS WAITEMATA’S SHROUD When the Union Company’s freighter Waikawa approached Auckland early this morning she felt her way through a lake of fog, which lay upon the city and harbour and extended some distance out to sea. Heavy fog this morning and yesterday morning caused early shipping movements to have the clangour of fog signals as their accompaniment. So heavy was the enveloping mist this morning that the Waikawa did not actually enter the harbour until three hours after her arrival oft the Heads. Until the fog cleared the Harbour Board’s signalling apparatus was sounded to guide vessels moving around the harbour. In both instances the fogs were preceded by brilliantly clear, moonlit nights. Once the sun ultimately dispensed them they were followed by glorious days of blazing sunshine.
