SCOTTISH SOCIETIES

PROPOSED UNITY CONFERENCE PROCEEDING Press Association WELLINGTON, Saturday. For some time a movement has been growing to bring under one head all Caledonian and other Scots’ societies in New Zealand. With this object in view a conference was opened at the Town Hall to-day. Mr. R. H. Nimmo, chief of the Wellington Caledonian Society, welcomed the delegates. A welcome was also given by Mr. Luckie on behalf of the mayor. Mr. Nimmo said there were over seventy societies in the Dominion and they were increasing. Clanship was characteristic of the Scottish people and by such an organisation as they proposed they could work together. The questions needing attention were the promotion of the study of Scottish history, literature and culture. Mr. Nimmo was appointed chairmai and Mr. H. S. Hannah secretary.
