EASTER FESTIVAL
RACING AT ELLERSLIE OAKS FAVOURITE DEFEATED MERRY DAY FOR SPORTSMEN X’o-day was a merry day for sportsmen throughout New Zealand, racing and 'trotting meetings were held in various centres. A huge crowd thronged the beautiful course at Ellerslie, where glorious sunshine added to the delight of an excellent day’s racing.
GREAT NORTHERN OAKS Of 700sovs. ; one mile and a-half. 2 FLYING JULIET (E. Robinson) blk f, by Romeo—Penella, 3yrs, 8.10, R. Reed 1 I—LADY DESMOND (T. Newman), b f, by Limond—Bronze, Syrs., 8.10, J. Barry 2 3 PHAOLA (E. H. B. Milsom) eh f by Catmint—Hyades, 3yrs., 8.10 R. McTavish 3 Also started : 5- 8.10, P. Henderson .. 4 4 TINOITT, 8.10, A. Tinker .... 6 6 MERVETTE, 8.10, A. Tinker .. 6‘ Winner trained by* H. Eva, Te Aroha. Won by a length, five lengths between second and third. Time, 2.38 3-5. FLYJNG JULIET RUNS ON The defection of Barryander and Macroom left a bare two-dividend field for the G.N. Oaks, and in a good pool Lady Desmond was made a very hot favourite, with £4,034 invested on her chances, and Plying Juliet and Phaola were evenly backed. A god start saw Acushla entrusted with the role of pacemaker*, being followed up the straight the first time by Phaola, Flying Juliet, Lady Desmond, Tinoiti and Mervette. There was little change to the six furlongs, where the leader held an advantage of two lengths from Flying‘Juliet and Phaola, with the favourite heading the other trio. Crossing the top Phaola had run up to Acushla, and the pair came into the straight gn terms, with Flying Juliet just behind them, and Tinoiti and Lady Desmond together three lengths further back. Once straightened up Flying Juliet came through and stayed there, and although Lady Desmond flattered at the furlong the former was going nearly as good at the end, finally winning by a length. Phaola was a good four lengths away, Tinoiti next, with Mervette several lengths further back. Flying Juliet, principally noted as a sprinter, hung on very well over the* last bit and proved a good winner. Lady Desmond was a bit lame when she went out, but she went better when warmed up, although it can be said that she was never going kindly. They ran the first quarter in 27 4-5, three furlongs in 41, half mile in 54 2-5, five furlongs in 1.8 3-5, six furlongs in 1.21, seven furlongs in 1.34 1-5, the first mile in 1.47 4-5 and the nine furlongs in 2.0 3-5. BRIGHTON HURDLE RACE Of 650sovs. ; two miles. 9—ROYAL FORM (John Paterson), b g, by Royal Soult—Prettyform, syrs., 10.3, Coleman 1 I—ARCHIBALD1 —ARCHIBALD (C. Stanaway, (.fell). Winner trained by John Patterson, Lllerslie. Won by a head, half a length between second and third. Time, 3.42. hurdles to royal form Fourteen came out for the Brighton Hurdles, Archibald being a firm favourite from the opening of the market, and he carried more than twice the amount invested on Royal Abbey (who gave his backers a poor run), Peter Rosa and Kawa, little separating this trio. Archibald found his feet very quickly, but was steadied, Royal Form going out to make the pace from Kawa, Archibald, Dead Sweet, Mia Bella, Gold Rain (who came down at the second hurdle), Peter Rosa and Day Bell. Passing the stands the first time Day Bell. Archibald and Kawa were practically on terms, being followed out of the straight by Royal Form, Dead Sweet, Rangatahi, Mia Bella, Te Tahi, and Glenotus. At the five furlongs Royal Form again went into the lead, being followed by Archibald, Glenotus, Rangatahi, Dead Sweet, Peter Rosa, Mia Bella and Te Tahi. At the three furlongs the favourite pulled his way to the front and showed the way into the straight two lengths ahead of Hoya! Form and Glenotus, with. Rangatahi, Peter Rosa, Dead, Sweet, Mia Belia, and Sir Roseberry next in order. As they came over the last fence there was little between Archibald, Glenotus, and Royal Form, and these three had the issue to themselves. The favourite still had his head in front a furlong from home, but a little further on Royal Form joined issue, and in a good finish between the pair Royal Form won by a head. Glenotus was only three parts of a length away third, and there was good gap back to Rangatahi, who was followed by Peter Rosa. Sir Roseberry, Mia Bella and Te Tahi. Royal Form came at the end whin apparently beaten and displayed sheer grit in a tight finish. Archibald made a bad jump at the five furlongs, and this, combined with the fact that he was pulling hard, cost him the race. Glenotus was a bit unlucky in the straight. Passin’ Through ran a long wav in the rear throughout, and Day Bell’s rider lost an iron when going well. E. Stanaway, rider of Gold Rain, received a bruising when that horse fell. GREAT NORTHERN CHAMPAGNE STAKES I—GASCONY (T. H. Lowry), b g. by King John —First Blow, 2yrs, 8.10, R. Reed 1 3 —PAG A NELLI (G. S. Crawford and R. 4 COVENT GARDEN (bracketed with Damaris), S.lO, J. Barry .. 5 5 SILVERMINE, 8.10, A. McCormac 6 7—TEA LADY, 8.8, E. Keesing .... 7 S—EXALTED, 8.8, R. Hall 8 S—DAMARIS (bracketed with Covent Garden), 8.8, L. Pine; did not leave the barrier. Winner trained by F. Davis, Woodville. Won by a neck, a similar distance between second and third. Time, 1.14. GASCONY IN GOOD STYLE Of the nine runners in the Champagne Stakes there was most money for Gascony, who wound up at a short price, being entrusted with £1,242 more than Cimabue, with Paganelli a little better backed than the Currie bracket. At the start Damaris, who was rather restless, whipped round and was left, taking no part in the race. Cimabue, Gascony, Paganelli and Silvermine moved off almost together. When they had settled down Cimabue had a slight call over Gascony, the pair being clear of Silvermine and Paganelli, with In the Shade and Exalted next, and Covent Garden tailing the bunch. As they came into the home stretch the first two were running together, with Paganelli and Silvermine close up, followed by In the Shade and Exalted. At the furlong post Cimabue and Gascony were just in front of In the Shade and Paganelli, and it was Cimabue that was first to fade out. Paganelli was beginning to press the favourite, but Reed had something left for the final, effort,* and he responded to Paganelli’s challenge to secure the thick end of the stake by a neck. In the Shade, who came again, was only a neck behind Paganelli ,and Cimabue was fourth, another length away. Then came Covent Garden, Silvermine, and Tea Lady. The pace was on from the jump out, the first furlong taking 13 4-5 sec, and 36sec. seeing the third furlong left behind.
