MEEK LITTLE MAN FROM WANGANUI
“GOING THE PACE” To look at Daniel Keane, of Wanganui—a meek little man of 40 with sandy hair and a drooping moustache —one would never think he had it in him to “go the pace.” But appearances are often deceptive. Only a few weeks ago Keane, in a moment of alcoholic aberration, was guided by the firm and friendly hand of a constable to the lock-up. There it was found that he was a comparatively wealthy man. At any rate, he had £l4 or £ls on him, which is more than many can boast. That was quite a short time ago. On Thursday night he was discovered in a shed in a timber yard in Fanshawe Street—dead to the world. This morning he appeared in the Police Court looking meeker than ever, and a little the worse for wear, and pleaded guilty to being “found by night without lawful excuse” on those premises. “He has been charged with drunkenness on two different occasions recently,” Senior-Sergeant Edwards told Mr. Hunt, S.M., who was on the Bench. “He had £l4 or £ls on him last time he was arrested, and he has squandered that. He has 24 previous convictions, some for theft, but mostly for drunkenness, and he has spent 12 months at Rotoroa.” The question of board and lodging will not bother Daniel Keane, the meek little man from Wanganui, for a whole month.
