A TRIO IN TROUBLE
“UNDESIRABLE ASSOCIATIONS” WOMEN IN COURT “Our principal reason for bringing these women up is to get them away from undesirable associations,” siiid Senior-Sergeant Edwards in the Police Court this morning, when the third ©f a trio. Meryl Julian, a married woman of 25, appeared on a charge of having insufficient lawful means of support. Her counsel. Mr. Denniston, explained that the accused’s husband lived in the country, and was getting £7 a week. Twelve months ago she left him and came to town, but she was prepared to go back, and her husband was willing to take her back. “She was convicted last Christmas for the same thing.” said SeniorSergeant Edwards. "She’s been living with a coloured man.” “Oh!” said Mr. Hunt. The accused’3 brother, undertook to look after her until her husband came for her. “I haven’t seen her for seven years.” he said with emotion. I don’t want to send a girl to gaol, •f course I don’t,” said the magistrate sympathetically. “I only want to save her from herself.” He convicted the girl and ordered her to come up for sentence in six months if called on. According to the senior-sergeant, the habits and associations of Ellen Hawthorne, a woman of 45, were not all that might be desired. She was remanded for a week for a report from the female probation officer, Major Annie (Jordon. Another young woman, Mabel Jackson. aged 26, came up on the same charge. “The report I’ve had is that she is a good cook, and a good worker, but she won’t work. She gets a few' drinks, and gets out on the loose,” said the senior- sergea n t. Well, she won’t get on the loose for a week.” was Mr. Hunt’s comment as he remanded the girl till next Thursday for sentence.
