Y.W.C.A.

MONTHLY REPORT Mrs. C. W. Garrard, the president of the board of directors of the Y.W.C.A., presided over the monthly meeting held recently, while the short devotional service before the meeting proper commenced was conducted by the Rev. W. D. Morrison-Sutherland. The general secretary, Miss Jean Begg, reported that arrangements had been finalised for two Easter camps, one to be held at the Y.W.C.A. holiday house at Blockhouse Bay, for which nearly 60 of the younger girls had enrolled: while for senior girls a camp had been arranged for the Waitakere Ranges, and it would be attended by about 30 girls. The “camp mother” to the girl citizen camp will be Mrs. Robson, and Mrs. M. Rudd, of the board of directors, will act in a similar capacity for the senior girls. At each camp the programme is to include both study and recreation. It was reported that new appointments made were Miss Ruth Stevenson, immigration secretary; Mrs. Robson, holiday house matron, and Miss Bertha Salmond assistant in health and recreation department. An all-day staff conference had been held at Castor Bay, for the purpose of providing secretaries with an opportunity to discuss matters in connection with the activities of the association for the winter months. Addresses had been given to the staff each week by the Rev. W. G. Monckton and Mr. L. A. Lander on various topics of the day, including the “Situation in China —Past and Present,” and “International Problems.” The representatives of the local association at the annual meeting of the National Board of the Y.W.C.A. of New Zealand held in Wellington last month had been Mrs. Dickinson, Mrs. Garrard and Miss Begg. It had been decided that the local association should agree to the proposals of the National Board that China should be New Zealand’s field of support. For the purpose of raising money for the support of the world fellowship secretary, it was arranged that a fair should be held in July. It was reported that a further sum of £470 had been received from the Will of the late Mr. A. D. Lubecki, bringing the present total up to £670, and that a further sum was still to come. This money, together with all such moneys received by the association, will be utilised for building and other extension work.
