Fifty-five people, mostly women, were crushed to death in the wild rush of a thousand Hindus for the honour of being the first to bathe in the Ganges at Kumbh Mela, where the famous United Provinces Festival is held every twelfth year. The Mahamakan tank at Kumbh Mela, /n the municipality of Kumbakonan, attracts thousands of pilgrims who bathe together, believing that the holy waters of the Ganges appear in the tank every 12 years.
