OLYMPIC GAMES
DOMINION ATHLETES BETTER SUPPORT WANTED (From Our Resident Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, To-day. It is claimed by Mr. P. N. Rundle, chairman of the New Zealand Olympic Council, that the Dominion’s representation at the Olympic Games has not been satisfactory in the past. Small teams had been sent away to compete and to expect them to become acclimatised and give their best in the few days at their disposal before contests was too much. Great Britain, as the originator of all sports now participated in at the Olympiad, was well supported and £32,000 was collected prior to the last games to send the teams to Paris. New Zealand could give greater support. A meeting of delegates of the various sports was asked to form a district branch of the Olympic Council to execute organisation work in preparation for the Dominion’s team for Amsterdam next year. Mr. J. Heenan, one of the keenest athletic workers in Wellington, and convener of the meeting, said that sport in the Dominion had improved so greatly during the past two years that in duty to the sports themselves New Zealand must send a team to the next games. The records established lately revealed a startling raising of the standard. A branch was formed later. Efforts will be made to form similar organisations in Christchurch, Auckland and other centres. The boundaries of this district correspond with the Rugby boundaries.
