FOCH GETS EXCITED

FAVOURITE PIPE SMASHED When Marshal Ferdinand Foch is called upon to discuss the question of Germany’s fortifications on the Polish frontier he gesticulates and pounds the tables. It is the Marshal’s conviction that these forts are in violation of the Treaty of Versailles and should be destroyed. The old soldier’s convictions have lost him his favourite pipe. When asked his views by a friend Foch forgot that he held his pipe in his hand and struck a table a resounding blow to emphasise a point. The pipe was smashed. The marshal was sad and so was his caller. The best the friend could do was to present Foch with a new pipe. The current pipe incident recalls that Vice-President Dawes sent to the marshal a dozen of the well-known, upsidedown brand two years ago. Whether all have been smashed is unknown, but the fact remains that the latest victim was not of the upside-down variety.
