PAPAKURA AFFAIRS

MEETING OF TOWN BOARD (From Our Oicn Correspondent.) FAPAKURA, Tuesday. The Papakura Town Board met last evening, Mr. James McCall, chairman, presiding. In a letter to the board Messrs. Willis Bros, offered to contribute the sum of £lO if the board would extend the tarsealing of the Triangle to a point opposite their shop property in Broadway. Mr. McEnter expressed the opinion that the whole of Broadway should he tarsealed, which would bring a subsidy, as it was a highway. It was resolved to ask the works committee to prepare estimates of tarsealing both Broadway and Averill Street, It was agreed to donate £1 to the Auckland Hospital Patients’ Wireless Equipment Fund. A request from the Clarke Road ratepayers to have certain improvements done to their road and footpat! was referred to the works committee for a report as to cost. The Manurewa Town Board pointed out that as the Ilomai Ratepayers* Association was agitating for an improved suburban service, Papakura cooperation in pressing for the duplication was desirable. The board promised to help in the matter and appointed the chairman and Dr. J. B. Page as delegates to the suggested deputation. Complaints have recently been made to the Auckland Electric Power Board that Papakura does not get quite value for the money spent in street lighting, because of the automatic switches working a little too early in the evening. The power board gave assurance that the matter would be rectified and the adidtional light at the corner of King Edward Avenue and Onslow Road fixed at an early date. The finance committee’s recommendation that 50 per cent, of the permit fees go to the building inspector was adopted. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £1,032, with commitments approximately £350. The works committee’s recommendation to put down in permanent material the footpath between the Presbyterian Church and Walter’s Place, at an estimated cost of £lO, was authorised. Tenders are to be called for the construction of tar-sealed footpaths in Union Street: also in Wellington and Averill Streets, and the foreman was instructed to prepare specifications. Messrs. Garlick and A. Willis % were elected to represent the ratepayers on the fire brigade management committee. A sub-committee consisting of Dr. Page, Rev. W. C. Wood and the chairman was set up to consider the best methods of traffic control.
