AN ELECTION THRILL UNEMPLOYED’S NOMINEE FINDING THE DEPOSIT At five minutes to noon to-day Auckland’s unemployed had not nominated their candidates for the council. They did not have the nomination fees. There was a feverish anxiety among the 150 men who had gathered in the Civic Square. The constant query was “Where is Markwick?” Markwick, according to the men, offered to put up £.6 for the nomination of two candidates. He was supposed to attend the meeting at 11.45 a.m„ but there was no sign of him 10 minutes later. The leaders tried to grapple with the situation. The candidate, Mr. Syd. ' Brown, and Mr. L. ’ Howson, a committeeman, harangued the crowd and hats went round. There were lots of empty pockets, but one workless man gave £l. The rest of the needed sum came in coppers and small silver. At five seconds to twelve, the hour of the closing of the nominations, £ 3 in loose money was planked on the City Council coLinter. The nomination was accepted and Mr. Sydney Brown became the candidate. But it was a very near thing.
