NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE
A QUIET MORNING
Awarere was not long in throwing off his soreness and is once more bowling along briskly. Awarere was galloped on Whangarei, where he won on the concluding day. To Ride at Feilcing
As the Auckland horseman H. Dulieu has been offered several engagements at the Feilding meeting, he will attend that fixture in preference to the Auckland gathering.
A Light Morning Nothing in the way of fast work was accomplished at Ellerslie this morning, though those likely to compete at the coming meetings were exercised usefully on the sand and tan tracks.
Schooling Gold Rain E. Stanaway, who will ride Gold Rain in the Brighton Hurdles, will visit Te Aroha this week to school that jumper in view of his engagement on Saturday. Trainer R. Hines has Gold Rain in good condition and ready to strip fit. Gisborne Representatives C. Moorse is already on the scene with Garzon, King Willonyx and the Tea Tray filly Tea Laly, having arrived yesterday morning.
A Big String G. Jones is expected to reach Ellerslie to-morrow morning with Commendation, and F. Davis is due to arrive by the same train with Mr. T. H. Lowry’s string of seven.
Lightweights’ Mounts The lightweight W. H. Jones is to ride The Thorn in the Easter Handicap, and Barometer and Quincoma when available. S. Cammick will be on Papatu in the Easter Handicap. Included in R. Reilly’s engagements are Gold Jacket, Master Doon and Master Clements.
E. Warner will probably have the mount of Day Bell in the Brighton Hurdles, and R. E. Thompson Kawa in the same event. A Useful Quartette
Mr. A. B. Williams’s representatives, Rapine, Joy King, Decoy Bird and Star Stranger, arrived at Ellerslie yesterday morning in charge of trainer J. H. Jefferd. All appear to be in great heart. Decoy Bird, as full of life as usual, was given light exercise on the sand, and strode along well. Rapine carries as much condition as when last seen in Auckland, while no complaints can be found with Star Stranger or Joy King.
AT ADDINGTON
WORK OF EASTER CANDIDATES CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. A nor-’west wind was in evidence when training operations were commenced at Addington this morning. A number of horses were treated to serviceable essays, but none were required to do their best. Most of the work was done the reverse way. Schoolmaid, a speedy type of pacer by Logan Pointer from that good mare Schoolgirl, was indulged in about a mile and a half. She is in G. Holmes’ stable, and looks pretty well. After a holiday that has been most beneficial. Nelson Ata is putting a lot of pep into his work. He will not race for some time yet. Duke Bingen was treated to a few rounds the reverse way. He is a perfect trotter, and R. W. Franks has him in perfect buckle. This horse might win a race at Easter.
Drones’ display twice round the reverse way did not appeal. Our Lady, who is a much improved mare, was sent a mile and a half. She had a good hold of the bit all the way.
Sebisca showed the way over twelve furlongs to Great Peter, who went unhoppled. Neither was allowed to break the watch. Great Peter is light in condition, but Sebisca is very well. Rosey Nelson kept Nelson Boy company in an essay over a mile and a quarter. They were under a pull all the way.
Tarzan, in saddle, was sent a mile. He was hard ridden over the last two furlongs, but went slovenly. The time was bad.
RICCARTON NOTES FOOTFALL IN GREAT ORDER (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The well-known stallion. Kilbroney, will do stud duty in the North Island next season. Sayonara injured a foot and could not start at the Hororata meeting. The mishap is not serious, and will not prejudice his Easter engagements. Footfall is doing great work at Riccarton, and is a strong fancy for the Great Autumn Handicap. AUSTRALIAN RACING WARWICK FARM MEETING SYDNEY, Sunday. A record crowd attended the Warwick Farm races yesterday. The weather was fine and the going good. Amounis’s victory in the Chipping Norton Stakes was roundly hooted in view of his running at the last Rosehill races on the previous Saturday. Amounis demonstrated the highest class form by flashing past the pacemakers as if they were only moderates. The New Zealand colt Paleta ran unplaced in the Fairfield Handicap, and Quondong had a like r or-- 1 in connection with the CaLrwnatta Handicap. The following were the results of the leading events:
