MANUKAU YACHTING

A TREBLE CAPTURE A DOUBLE-REEF BREEZE Members of the Manukau Yacht Club took part on Saturday in racing for the Duff Cup (for yachts which have competed in five races); for the College Cup (for boats 18ft. and under) and for the handicap competition. Merry Jest (4min.) was first; Rover (18m in..) second; and Westward (33min.) third. Also started: Sea Toller, Xyria, Valdora, Mistral and Limelight. The start was made off the club-house over No. 1 course, and a return finish at the same point. The boats got away on a two-reef breeze. Merry Jest smartly picked up her handicap on the limit boats on the first mark, and went away increasingly to the end, winning by 20 minutes. After passing the first mark Rover carried her large spinaker and picked up considerably on the run back. Merry Jest thus scooped in the three awards —both cups and the handicap. She is owned by Messrs. Hempleman, Bray and Whitney, and was sailed by Mr. V. Young. There was only one starter in the launch race, the Kaipoi, which sailed the course and claimed the prize. CRUISING CLUB RACES The Manukau Cruising Club held races for yachts and launches on Saturday, although a “double-reef breeze’’ prevailed. While cruising about the line prior to the start the 18-footer Mystery capsized. The boats, nevertheless, got away. On their handicaps and after a good race finished as follows: Sylvia, 4hr. 39 min. 55sec., 1; Maidie (smin. late starting), 4hr. 45min. 30sec., 2; Hetty (4min. late), 4hr. sSmin, 28sec., 3. The Myra, Florence, Emerald and Sea Urchin did not finish. Sylvia in defeating Maidie by 35sec. (on corrected time) now holds the Fearon Challenge Cup. The launch race drew four boats, which were got away in the following order: Grace, Salome, Mermaid and Leila. The Mermaid soon passed the Grace and Salome and rounded the top mark at 3hr. 36min. 45see., followed by Grace, 3hr. 37min.; Leila, 3hr. 37min. 30sec.; and Salome, 3hr 37min. 40see. Finishing times and places are as follow: Leila, 3hr. 59min. 20sec., 1; Mermaid, 4hr. lmin. ssee., 2; Salome, 4hr. 9min. 30sec., 3; Grace, 4hr. 12min. 15sec., 4.
