WAITEMATA ROADS

MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS WIDTH OF METAL INADEQUATE To cope with the ever-increasing problem of road maintenance, particularly in regard to macadam roads, the Waitemata County Council recently decided to obtain reports from its two county engineers. A report prepared by the second engineer, Mr. A. Murray, was submitted at yesterday’s meeting of the council, when the appointment of two maintenance gangs, one for the eastern and one for the western riding, was recommended. The width of metal on main road , he considered, was altogether inadequate for traffic requirements, allowing as it did only one line of traffic, which was confined to two definite ruts, the result being that macadam roads soon lost their proper shape and camber, allowing ruts and pot-holes to be formed. Mr. Murray expressed the opinion that the width of metal on main thoroughfares should be widened immediately to at least 14 feet, with clay shoulders three feet in width on each side of the metal. The question was deferred until the next meeting, when the first engineer’s report will be available.
