TENDERS EXPECTED
CHAIRMAN IN TROUBLE (From Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, To-day. At the Whangarei County Council meeting yesterday Cr. Elliott, Hikurangi Riding, took strong exception to work involving the expenditure of £I,OOO being let by the chairman without calling for tenders. The chairman said that before the money was granted he asked the overseer of the Public Works Department if he was prepared to let the work at the price of the estimate and secured an affirmative reply. When the money was available he spoke to the overseer in reference to this Opuawhanga work and with the full consent of the Public Works Department let a contract at 3s a yard for shingle and Is 4d for earthwork, actually Id less than the Public Works Department estimate. The work was now progressing. Cr. Johnson strongly disapproved of the chairman’s procedure. The council had good contractors ready to tender for works and it was only fair to give them a chance by calling tenders for a work of such magnitude. After a long discussion it was decided to take no action, although were vorv disci tisfied.
