DEGENERATE’S TEARS IN COURT

FIVE YEARS’ HARD (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, To-day. In the Supreme Court to-day tli .stern appearance of the judge proved too much altogether for Lars Johan Anderson Strid, who appeared for sentence on serious assault charges. He tried to plead, but his voice gave way and he broke down and sobbed like a child. Repeating repentance for his crime, he blamed drink for his loss of self-control. The judge said it was apparently not the first offence and it was- necessary, in the interests of society, that the prisoner should be removed from the possibility of future indulgence in this abominable practice, and he was sentenced to five years’ hard labour.
