ONE YEAR HARD
SHIP'S CARGO BROACHED FUR COATS STOLEN (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. When dealing with John Murphy, who, together with another, broke open a case on a ship on’ which he worked, and stole fur coats of a value of £l7O, the Chief Justice said to-day: “This class of crime is usually committed in concert, never individually. It is a great danger to a ship, and detectives usually find it very difficult to trace.” It appeared to go on every time a ship arrived at a New Zealand port. Murphy pleaded shortly and simply for leniency, and said: “It is through drinking liquor that it has happened.” He was sent to hard labour for one year.
