“WRONG,” ALL RIGHT
“It’s all wrong.” Bertha Julia Clarkson was sure that it was all a big mistake. She’d been before the court last month for a breach of her prohibition order, and here she was again. She couldn’t understand. “It’s all wrong,” she repeated again and again this morning while a constable was relating how he had seen her getting out of a tram in Ponsonby with two bottles of beer in a parcel under her arm. “Don’t talk so much,” said Mr. Hunt from the bench. “You’re fined £l. Now if you do that again I’ll send you to the Island. We’re trying to protect you against yourself.” The same offence, which happened to be his third, left Henry Charles Kevey £2 18s poorer.
