ROAD MAINTENANCE
USERS SHOULD PAY DUTY OF H'GHWAYS BOARD (From Our Oxen Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. "I think the council should draw the attention of the Prime Minister to the need for legislation in the direction of making users pay for the upkeep of roads,” declared Mr. F. A. Snell at a meeting of the Hamilton Council last night. Mr. O. R. Farrer agreed that carowners were not paying a fair proportion of the cost of construction and upkeep of roads. He thought the Government should be reminded that the Highways Board had only expended half its available funds. The Highways Board should take over all the main roads through towns. Local bodies would thereby be relieved of the burden and there w’ould be an outlet for money lying idle. A resolution will be framed to be forwarded to the Government.
