EMPLOYERS ABSENT
APPRENTICESHIP MEETING SUGGESTED AMENDMENTS TO ACT Following on a circular from the Minister of Labour to apprenticeship committees and others asking for suggestions for amendments to the Acprenticeship Act a meeting was held in the Chamber of Commerce buildings, Swanson Street, last evening. The Employers’ Union wrote to the effect that it did not consider t,hat any good purpose would be served by such meetings, and that any resolutions passed would only express one side of any question, which would be valueless to the real purpose. Their representa--tives would not be in attendance at any further meetings. It was decided to write to the employers expressing l’egret at the attitude adopted and the meeting was continued with the employers absent. Resolutions were passed . suggesting amendments, among which was one (relating to section 15), which suggested that after the words “discharge him” there should be inserted a clause, "provided that where an Apprenticeship Committee has been established in the industry and locality concerned the employer shall have first obtained from the said committee their consent to discharge the apprentice.” The resolutions will be forwarded to the Minister of Labour, the Hon. G. J. Anderson.
