AFFORESTATION SCHEME

BLOCK SET ASIDE WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED (From Our Own Correspondent.) OHAKUNE, To-day. The Ohakune Chamber of Commerce has received word from the Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister for Agriculture, that the large tract of country known as the Karioi Run, comprising some 35,000 acres, has been definitely allocated for afforestation purposes. It is expected that operations in preparation for planting will commence next month, and should bring some measure of welcome relief to local unemployment which is becoming extremely acute owing to the closing of some mills and retrenchment in others. During the last week or so many mill workers have been thrown out of employment along the line in this district.
