TRAFFIC CONTROL
POLICE SERVICE COSTLY COUNCIL APPOINTS OWN L - OFFICERS (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Point control by police in Christchurch is to be abolished and the council decided last evening to extend civic control to the points by the appointment of five additional inspectors. This decision has been forced on the council by the enormous increase in cost for the service of policemen. In the past the city has paid £ 500 a year for three points. Now the Police Commissioner has notified that from March 31 the cost will be £1368 a year. The five additional inspectors will cost £I3OO, but as the inspectors will be available for other duties, the cost of point duty will work out at £Bl2. The new inspectors will require training, and thrde months’ extension of the present agreement with the police is being sought.
