RACING

(By “EARLY BIRDS') Smart Hacks A couple of very smart hacks figure in the entries for the Auckland Easter Handicap. They are Whenuanui and King's Folly. Of the two the former is undoubtedly the better at present. It was not so very long ago that Whenuanui was a signal failure in the poorest of company, but a change of stable performed a miracle, and it was not long before the Acre gelding began to make his presence felt. A double at the Foxton meeting was followed by a similar pleasing result at Hawera, and each win, despite the increasing poundage carried, was achieved easier than its predecessor. A third and then another win followed, and then Whenuanui was promoted to open class, and on his first—and only—appearance among the cracks he ran a dead-heat for second to Shirley at Trentham. The Wanganui gelding’s appearance at Ellerslie is being awaited with interest. King’s Folly has not made such rapid progress as Whenuanui, but nevertheless his two wins this season have been of the impressive variety, particularly in view of the fact that he has only recently made his reappearance after a spell of about eighteen months. Over the Country Although Gold Peak has been paid up for in the hurdles at the Waipapakauri meeting next Thursday—and he should run well—this event will probably be regarded by his connections more in the nature of a brushing up gallop in view of his more important engagements in the near future, but of course they will go for the stake attached to the Whangarei events. At the Auckland meeting next month the Taranaki jumper has not been engaged for the Brighton Hurdles, his mission being the steeeplechase races each day. Gold Peak is a good jumper, and last month he scored effectively in the open hurdles at Wanganui, having behind him Elvaette and Matu, who represent fair form over the sticks. Two Representatives The New Plymouth sportsman, Mr. A. Alexander, in addition to Silvermine, will have Orazone racing at the forthcoming Auckland meeting. This mare is very fast, and her record in her few starts so far this season is quite good. In five starts she has won tw’o races and run a second and a third, and her unplaced effort was undoubtedly brought about by missing the jumpout in a good sized field. Orazone may not be a champion, but there is no denying that she is worth consideration when the company is other than of the town hall class. She is by defunct Bisogne from Ora, a mare that has given a few good performers to the turf in recent years. Both Silvermine and Orazone are trained by J. Brown at Hawera. Declined Th(*ir Engagements Scratchings were very plentiful at the Bay of Plenty gathering at Tauranga on Saturday. The cup field was sadly reduced from an acceptance of a dozen to five starters, and the race saw The Author (who is being well placed these days) from the hurdler Peter Rosa. Both

Passionate and Right and Left ran badly, the pair being the last to finish. From all accounts it was a most disappointing contest. Well-bred Filly If breeding counts for anything, then the Southland sportsman, Mr. W. T. Hazlett, has a good one in the filly Glad Light by Paper Money from Simper, the dam of several dashing performers that have raced in this oWner-breeder’s colours. Early in the season Glad Light, who is a half-sister to the brilliant Razzle Dazzle and Gold Light, was plentifully engaged, but she went wrong, and up to the present she has not raced. Therefore it is pleasing to note that she has had her G.N. Champagne Stakes engagement continued, in addition to being accorded a nomination in the two-year-old handicap on the second day of the Auckland autumn meeting, so that there seems to be a prospect of Glad Light making her turf debut at Ellerslie, and in that event it is but natural that such a well-bred young damsel will be the cynosure of all eyes when she is saddled up. The filly is to be brought north by the veteran trainer, Stuart Waddell, and she will be accompanied by Shirley and the improving King’s Folly. Making a Favourite There is already a disposition to make Reremoana and Joy King the favourite for the A.R.C. Easter Handicap, and although these are undoubtedly the form horses in the race —they ran first and second in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham backers would be well advised to hold off until the declaration of the weights for the event. Reremoana is certain to be asked to carry a very stiff impost, if he is awarded under ten stone would be regarded as a certain runner. But then that is for the handicapper to say. The Avondale Meeting Originally fixed for Saturday and Wednesday, April 23 and 27, the Avondale Club has decided to hold the second day of its autumn fixture on Tuesday, April 26. This change will be appreciated by visiting owners and trainers, for it means that they will be able to get away home a day earlier, while those sportsmen who so desire will a chance to assist at the popular Manawatu meeting on April 28 and 30. Entries for the Avondale fixture are due to close at 5 p.m. next Friday, and a liberal response is anticipated from both visiting and local owners. Above the Ordinary Auckland racegoers next month stand an excellent chance of seeing one of the most promising recruits to the hurdling game in action at Ellerslie This horse is Ardath, a fine upstanding'sort who has won each of the three events over the sticks that he has contested. His mission is the Brighton Hurdles, and if he can see the two mile journey out he will be found a p pretty tough proposition. The chestnut has done everything asked of him. Started at Foxton a couple of months ago he was . n greatly fancied by his party, but he won by the proverbial street and paid a thumping dividend. He then went on and scored at New Plymouth and Wanganui, winning on each occasion with consummate ease. At Wal *J nui he carried 10.12 and was conceding weight to Matu, Elvaette, Comedy Prince and the first day’s winner, r’nid Peak and his winning margin was five a lengths, but it couldl have been considerably more. Yes Ardath is the goods, and as L. Knapp know how to prepare jumpers and to keep them up to the collar, is every prospect of the Hallowmas— Rau Rau gelding adding further laurels to his record at Ellerslie. Jockey For Masterton If r Reilly visits' ' the Masterton meeting he will have the mount on Black Mint. Arrivals At Ellerslie The Avondale mentor, G. Lindsay, is likely to be domiciled at Ellerslie with Alonsoa, Bahadur and a two-yfear-old until the Easter meeting. To Race At Ellerslie Since running at the Ohinemuri meeting, Passin’ Through has gone on the right way, and looked well while being exercised at Ellerslie. His owner, Mr. S. Cleaver, intends remaining at Auckland with the ’chaser until after Easter. An Improved Hack Plane Pearl is looking in much better condition than formerly, and is to be taken to Whangarei in company with Scot Free, Slump and Creation. Plane Pearl when ready is a useful customer, and if stripped well should not be short of friends. In Work Again Stormfiend, a half-brother to Wyoming, until recently trained by his owner at Tuakau, has been taken in hand by A. Morrow at Ellerslie. Stormfiend, by Swift Flight from Kuratua, had his

k hrst run at the Frankton meeting, but I met trouble and fell. He is only a 1 four-year-old, so there should be plenty 1 of time for him to mature. Trained Off When White Bird ran third at the ] Frankton meeting it was generally anti- t cipated that the English bred mare had struck form, and would soon be among the -winning division. If track work can be taken as a guide then White Bird will have to improve considerably, for on Saturday morning she did not go too well, and yesterday morning, on number 2 grass, was well beaten by Clarus in a six furlong sprint. Racing At Whangarei The combined Waipapakauri and Whangarei Clubs’ meetings will be held at Whangarei on Thursday and Saturday next. The Waipapakauri fixture eventuates on Thursday, and the Whangarei Club races on Saturday. For Thursday’s events excellent acceptances have been received, and every thing points to a most successful meeting. The Whangarei gathering will follow the Waipapakauri meeting as if it was the second day of the one fixture, so that the weights will be declared on Thursday night and the acceptances closed at 9 o’clock that night. The Railway Department announces the issue of excursion fares on Thursday and Saturday, with a special train leaving Auckland at 5.57 a.m. each day. Forfeited All Engagements Chairman and Lady Robinson have been scratched for all engagements at the Waipapakauri and Whangarei meetings. The Riccarton Double In the Great Easter Handicap there are a few that seem to stand out at the weights, namely, Shirley, Booster, Hynanna, First Acre, Set Sail, Baldowa, Lady Bentinck and Paddon, but some of these are also in the Auckland Easter Handicap. In the Great Autumn Handicap, Rapine, Tanadees, Piuthair, Rapier and Hynanna are a very likely quintette. Rapine is by no means badly handicapped, and in their respective races the Martian gelding appeals much more than Reremoana at the weights. Reremoana’s Weight The C.J.C. handicapper, Mr. J. E. Henrys, has announced his adjustments for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps at Riccarton next month, and now the critics will be busy. At the top of the Great Easter weights of course is Reremoana and at first sight it appears that the chestnut has been badly treated in being given 10.5. It is certainly a steadier, but a close analysis shows that Mr. G. F. Moore’s horse could not very well have got in with less. He is asked to concede eight pounds to Grand Knight, and throughout the imported horse Reremoana is not badly treated, for in the Thompson Handicap Mr. Coyle placed the Taranaki gelding a couple of pounds above Grand Knight. The former won, and Grand Knight did not start. However, it is more than likely that Reremoana will be at Ellerslie and not at Riccarton. Handicaps of Three-Year-Olds It is interesting to note that Mr. J. E. Henry’s rates Countersign as superior to Hynanna over the seven furlongs of the Great Easter Handicap, for he has awarded both of these three-year-olds 7.13, whereas under .the weight-for-age scale Hynanna would have to carry 8.8 and Countersign 8.6, the difference being represented by the sex allowance. The filly won the Dunedin Guineas and the Hazlett Memorial, whereas Hynanna’s best efforts have been in handicap events, as witness his three successes this season at Awapuni, Wairarapa, Trentham arid Dannevirke. At the latter place he carried 9.8, and after meeting with trouble during the journey he finally won handsomely. However, these two three-year-olds may not meet, for it is on the cards that Mr. W. R. Kemball’s representative will be at Ellerslie. Mr. Henrys is undoubtedly impressed with Hynanna as a stayer, for he has given him 8.9, five pounds over weight-for age, in the Great Autumn Handicap. Gift for Rapine? Northern sportsmen do not need to be told that Rapine is a great horse over a distance, and even under the stiffest of imposts. Last month at Wanganui, on a circular track not at all in his favour, the Martian-Pineta gelding conceded Piuthair 23 pounds and ran her to a head, a great performance, for just previously the daughter of Kilbroney and Blackada had scored in both the Egmont and Taranaki Cups. The weights at Wanganui were, Rapine 10.4, Piuthair 8.9. Now Rapine has been awarded 10.1 in the Great Autumn Handicap, and Piuthair 8.13, so that it can be said that both particularly Rapine are well treated, for the long run in at Riccarton would be all in his favour. Should Rapine go to the post in the Grand Autumn he will take all sorts of beating, but it must be remembered that he also claims engagements at Ellerslie. Perhaps Mr. A. B. Williams may now decide to send his horses south, for there is no doubt that Rapine has been exceptionally well treated. Lady Desmond’s Brilliancy Apparently there was even more merit in Lady Desmond’s victory in the Rangitikei Cup than generally thought. Here is what a Wanganui writer has to say about her effort: When Lady Desmond was allotted the impost of 7.13 in the Rangitikei Cup, it was considered that the handicapper of her win in the Nelson Cup under 7.8. had treated her rather leniently in view She was second choice of backers when the totalisator closed, and when the barrier went up was backing out, being last to get away. Barry had an ininterrupted passage in attempting to get his mount through on the rails and was still last with six furlongs to go. Down the back stretch Lady Desmond started to make up ground, being taken right round the field, and at the bend she was just in behind , the leaders. Once straightened up the Limond mare went on to head off Blue Peter and won handsomely by a length. Lady Desmond has not been out of a place in her four starts this season, and claims an engagement in the Great Northern Oaks. Waikato Notes Trainer J. F. Tutchen, of Frankton, has a promising apprentice McMahon, who has been riding well of late. He will pilot Delightment in the open sprint at Whangarei. Mervette, King Selwyn and Rangitahi will be taken North from Frankton to Vyhangarei by Trainer J. F. Tutchen, and will be ridden by McMahon in the flat events. At Frankton, Tutchen is keeping a string of horses going, including Prince Rufus, Abbess, Miss Vera and Kawa, in view of Easter engagements. The Author’s success in the principal event at the Bay of Plenty fixture was not unexpected in the Waikato, in view of his forward running of late on the country circuit, and his win was predicted by many when they saw he had the services of a good horseman. Red Comet, who won the Trial Plate by a nose from Te Waka, made his appearance at the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s meeting in the hurdles on the first day, but failed to materialise. However, in view of his running there were many ready to support him in

his races at Tauranga. He celebrated his second appearance at the meeting: by again narrowly defeating the imHandlcap. proving Te Waka in the County Stakes Te Waka, the Waharoa*trained gelding, had been doing the hack races on the country round without success until he captured a brace of seconds at the Bay of Plenty meeting. On the score of his breeding they were fully due too. CANTERBURY MEETING WEIGHTS DECLARED Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Monday.
