A PICKPOCKET
NOT WANTED IN N.Z. CAME HERE FOR DUKE’S VISIT “He is one of four professional pickpockets who came to New Zealand to reap a rich harvest during the Duke of York’s visit,” said Chief Detective Cummings in the Magistrate’s Court this morning when James O’Neil, alias Sid Morgan, 46, appeared for sentence, after being live weeks on remand, on a charge of being idle and disorderly and consorting’ with reputed thieves. "He would not be allowed to land in Australia.” the chief detective continued. ‘‘and the shipping company won’t take the risk of taking him to Canada and having him returned.” He had not enough money to take him back to England, it was explained. "He was with another man who did seven years for manslaughter,” Mr. Cummings added, “and I understand he has been convicted overseas.” “It is unfortunate that he has not been able to leave New Zealand.” commented Mr. McKean drily, and sentenced O’Neil to a month’s imprisonment.
