WOMAN ASSAULTED IN QUEEN STREET

AUSTRALIAN FINED £lO “ I do not think the man was too drunk to realise the seriousness of his act,” said Mr. McKean in the Magistrate's Court this morning, when he lined Cyril Newcombe, an Australian, aged 30, £lO for assaulting Christina Basham, a married woman, in Queen Street. The alternative was one month. Evidence was given that Newcombe, who was drunk at the time, suddenly approached Mrs. Basham near the railway entrance and put his hand under her coat. The accused admitted being drunk, but said that he had no recollection of the assqult. In addition to the .£lO fine he was fined 10s on the charge of drunkenness, and ordered to pay 30s witnesses’ expenses.
