PASSENGER MISSING FROM MAUNGANUI
BERTH NOT SLEPT IN A passenger who was on the Maunganui when that vessel sailed from Sydney for Auckland on March 24 could not be found the following morning. It is surmised that he disappeared overboard. The missing- man is J. Redmayne, who booked his passage in the second saloon. Very little is known of him except that, according to the clearance papers, he is a New Zealander, and a taxi-driver. Redmayne booked his seat in the dining-saloon on the afternoon of March 24. The vessel sailed at three o’clock in the afternoon. Next morning it was found that Redmayne had not slept in his berth. A search failed to discover him on the vessel. A steward last saw Redmayne on deck at 5.40 o’clock on the afternoon of March 24. He seemed quite well then. The missing man was 50 years of age. That is all that Is known about him. When it was discovered that he had disappeared, his luggage was locked in his cabin and was handed over to the police on the arrival of the Maunganui at Auckland this morning. In the luggage found in Redmayne’s cabin was a motor-driver’s licence Issued by the Auckland City Council.
