BEETHOVEN CENTENARY The Auckland Society of Musicians gave a Beethoven recital on Sunday afternoon to mark the centenary of the composer’s death (March 20, 1827). A very notable feature of the Programme was the piano concerto in C minor, op. 37, of which the first movement (Allegro con. brio) was Played by Mr. Cyril Towsey, the Largo by Mr. H. Barry Coney, and the concluding Allegro by Mr. Eric Waters. The string quartet in B flat. op. 18, wus played by the Misses Stoddart, Walls, Stevenson and Hemus. Mr. John Tait’s Madrigal choir sang four of the “Gellent” lieder. arranged as Part songs by Mr. Tait, and the final chorus from “The Mount of Olives.” Mrs. Towsey sang “lch Liebe Dich” and “In Questa Tomba.” Miss Margaret Stoddart played the violin Romance in G. and Miss Dora Judson the D minor piano sonata, op. 31. These items were heard with keen ; nterest bv a large audience of members ’and their friends.
