TIMARU CONTESTS
FINE CUP PERFORMANCE MACHINE GUN IMPRESSES (.Special to THE SUN. ) TIMARU, Saturday. The autumn meeting of the Timaru Trotting Club was held under perfect conditions and before a representative attendance of approximately 5,000. The programme was embellished With clean contests and interesting racing. The course was in splendid order. The totalisator handled £20,676, against £18,635 last year. Ridden by J. McLennan, Bon Wood won the Kingsdown Handicap with a lot in hand from 108yds. behind. He reached the front a mile from home, and merely jogged along in the lead to reach the judge eight lengths in front of an outsider in Red Peter, who just got up in the last 20yds. to beat Ben Logan for second money.; Ben Logan has been at the game a long time, and has now reached a stage from which he will not improve much. Llano was favourite, but despite R. Townley’s best efforts he was well beaten into fourth place. AN EVERY-DAV SORT A real every-day-kind of a six-year-old pacer in Marlindo won the Trial Handicap rather handily. He is a lazy customer, but a good pacer that will go on winning races. His sire, Michael Galindo, was one of the best trotters seen out in New Zealand, and his dam, Marion, was a good race mare. Marlindo is owned by Mr. F. S. Bates and was driven by J. Purdon. The favourite, Helen, failed to begin smartly, but once on the journey she showed that she is a high-class pacer and one that will come right with racing. Sylvie Logan was with the winner for ten furlongs and then tired very badly. A well-backed mare in Great Night failed to race up to expectations, but Nan Brent may be marked off for future reference. The three-year-old Mac de Ora gave his opponents upward of 84yds. and finished second. It was a good performance. During the running Scottish Maid fell and interfered with Electric Huon, causing his driver to be thrown out of his sulky. FAVOURITE FAILS IN THE CUP Terence Dillon was sent out favourite for the Timaru Trotting Cup, but never raised the hopes of his backers. Half a mile from home he was in a good enough position to come on and win, but was not equal tp the occasion. After losing quite 30yds. through failing to begin properly, Pan Yan got to the front at the end of a furlong. Passing the stand he was joined by Dalmeny, the pair going on from Haunui, Menember, Terence Dillon, Macaranda, Machine Gun and Succession. Dalmeny commenced to tire three furlongs from home, but though under pressure the best he could do was to finish in fifth place. So far it is obvious that he does not appreciate a two-mile journey. Over the last half mile Machine Gun put in some great work. He got on terms with Pan Yan, and after a sharp struggle he beat the grey gelding home by half a length. Machine Gun was recently purchased by the Auckland sportsman, Mr. G. McMillan, and is by Machine Brick from Thora He is a brilliant customer and is a good stayer, and it can be safely anticipated that he will improve under R. Berrys tuition. Menember, Succession, Macaranda and Talent all went good races. When the field had traversed seven furlongs Honour Bright fell and gave his pilot, M. Holmes, a nasty shaking. The Seadown Handicap provided a good finish among three tired horses in Planet, Lochree and Evelyn Locanda Of the two Evelyn Locanda hung on best and beat Lochree by half a length, and Lochree beat Planet by a neck. The favourite, Colene Pointer, was badly interfered with soon after the start by the erratic pacer Meddler, The winner is a well bred mare, being by Brent Locanda from Evelyn, and can be expected to develop into a useful performer next season. HOT FAVOURITE BEATEN Trampfast was backed as if he could not get beaten in the Temuka Handicap. Though by himself at the rear of the field he refused to strike his gait. Nourrnahal was allowed to make the running from Ben Logan, Sea Queen, Merry Peter, Avalanche and Freeman. When nearing the home bend Ben Logan was beaten, and Merry Peter and Sea Queen set out to collar Nourmahal. Half-way down the straight Nourrnahal commenced to tire badly, and Sea Queen came along and beat her by two lengths, with Merry Peter a similar distance away third. The placed horses are an average lot that will have to improve to win decent races. Bon Wood did not go as well in harness as he did when he won earlier in the day, which was in saddle. Pan Yan enjoyed an excellent despatch in the Washdyke Handicap, and though hard pressed a furlong from home he came away at the finish and won by eight lengths from Bold Bill, who had every chance. Des--borough was in third place when the field settled down. . Going along the back he ran into second place, but was beaten two furlongs from home. Willia.m the Great and Logan Holme were most conspicuous of the beaten division and showed promise of winning races before the season is much further advanced. A “CERTAINTY” SCORES Logan Park was regarded as a certainty tor the Fairlie Handicap, and he won as well as he was backed. After being slow over the first furlong he ran to the front with ten furlongs to go, and never looked like getting beaten. He is a pupil of W. J. Tomkinson’s stable, and is by Logan Pointer from Miss Burlington. Pluto broke up at the start. Dusky Pointer, Jolly Roger, Wee Gus, Kibiringi and First Water were handily placed all the way, but they were all hard at it a furlong from home. Dusky Pointer stayed on best of the beaten division to secure second money, and Jolly Roger was third. The old grey trotting gelding, Blue Thorpe, outstayed the pacers in the Wai-Jti Handicap, and won easily. The hot favourites, Margalong and Haydock.. failed to begin correctly, Haydock declining to take any part in the race. Margalong ran into fourth place three furlongs from home, but when expected to come on he failed to respond, being beaten into fifth place. Logan Lad, Wastewood, and Drone made the early running. Half a mile from home Nepia was proclaimed the winner, but when the straight was reached Drone, Wastewood and Nepia all cried enough. At that stage it looked as if Logan Lad would prevail, but then Blue Thorpe appeared on the scene and made him look silly. The victory of a trotter among pacers in a sprint event reminds one of the days of that great horse Revenue. KINGSDOWN HANDICAP One and a-half miles - —BOXWOOD, 180yds. bhd. (J.
