TROTTING
THAMES TROTS A SUCCESSFUL MEETING CUP TO GOLD JACKET The Thames Trotting Club’s annual meeting was held on the Parawai racecourse on Saturday in fine weather, and with a large gathering, including several hundreds who travelled by steamer and motor conveyances from Auckland. These helped to swell the totalisator investments to such an extent as to enable the machine to record an increase of £2,886 on the figures returned for last year. The chief event, the Thames Cup, was won by the favourite, Gold Jacket, owned by Mr. E. J. Parkes, after a keen tussle with Respect. Mr. T. W. Rhodes, M.P., presented the cup to the owner of Gold Jacket, amidst applause. THE OPENING EVENT Proceedings commenced with the Hikutaia Handicap. There were no scratchings, and Gold Circle was entrusted with £346. Golden Grattan £209, Andover £l9l, and Anseline £IBB. The public were well astray in their judgment, for outsiders in Lola Reklaw and Charming Pronto filled the dividend-paying places. Red Dennis, and Gold Circle broke early, the lead being taken by Lola Reklaw, with Charming Pronto, Carnui, Golden Grattan, and Red Dennis following. The order was the same six furlongs from home, and as they neared the straight Charming Pronto and Golden Grattan began to close on the leader. Lola Reklaw, however, finished full of running, and won decisively by two lengths from Charming Pronto, who defeated the fast-finishing Anseline by half a length. Ben Zolock was some distance away, followed by Teddy Ansel, Anaroa, and Gold Circle. The winner hails from Whangarei, and as she was seventh in request, with only £7B invested on her chance, a solid dividend was returned. ALL IN THE AIR The Parawai Handicap was a very poor contest, as all those engaged broke badly, and gave at one stage or another good exhibitions of galloping. Roez £512, Lady Ena £264, Colonel Thorpe £237, and Red Dennis £232, were the best backed, while the ultimate winner, Mollie Park, carried £ 87. The field was got away well, Mollie Park taking charge, while Paradiam, Lochade, Weld Downs, and Roez were most prominent of the others. The further they went the worse they trotted, and as they entered on the concluding half-mile Mollie Park was well clear of Paradiam, with Lochade some lengths further away, and Roez, Lady Ena, Wild Downs, and Colonel Thorpe following. As they ran to the judge, Paradiam ranged alongside of Mollie Park, who broke, and galloped a great deal, to eventually send Paradiam off his feet, and she beat hirn home by a length. Lochade was a poor third, with Wild Downs, Roez, Lady Ena, and Colonel Thorpe following. Mollie Park returned a useful double-figure dividend. ROAMER TOO GOOD Fifteen left the birdcage to contest the Turua Handicap. Lola Reklaw not going home faster in the opening event than she was asked to do. was not penalised for her win. Gaza was a well-supported first fancy with £464 on his chance, while Dealer £328. Roamor £299, Lola Reklaw £216. and Fungus £l4l, were next in request Leewood was the early leader. but broke shortly after the start, allowing Lola Reklaw to take command and carry on the running from Fungus, Moko Chief, Gold Cast, Roamer. and Gaza. Moko Chief broke with half the distance covered, and fell back the order of the others being unchanged. Four furlongs from home home Lola Reklaw still had command, with Fungus and Gold Cast attending her, and Roamer beginning to move up. Rounding the turn into the straight. Roamer closed on Lola Reklaw, and in a strong set-to over the concluding stages beat her home by half a length. Fungus occupied third place*. a length and ahalf further back, with Sidelight fourth, and Gaza. Lady Barrington, Golden Park, and Ekoranei most prominent of the others. Althought the best Gaza could do was to run fifth, he should be kept in mind for future events. THE CUP CONTEST Luvan was the only defection from the Thames Cup, leaving a field of 16 to contest the two-mile event When the machine had closed, Gold Jacket was favourite with £393 invested on him, Florent and Bingen Starr each carrying £297, Rua Pere £236. and Rock Hinton £219, one ticket mere than was invested on Respect. The race was spoilt by a very poor start, for Olandore was practically turned the wrong way. Nelson Tasker' was side on. Kua Pere failed to leave the mark, and Billy Whizz, racing unhoppled. broke, while Respect, who had been behaving badly, did not get away well. S. Groat rushed Bingen King to the front, to take command from Gold Sound, Goldfinch, and Gold Jacket, and this order w; s maintained foi' the first mile, where Goldfinch was the leader, and Rock Hinton had also joined the bunch in fror.t. with Gold Jacket. Florent, Respect, Buz Buz. and Jean Darling not far away. Reliance was pulled up after a little over half the journey had been traversed, and a little later Florent met trouble and suffered likewise. By the time the field had reached the two furlong post Gold Jacket had taken charge, and he led into the straight from Respect, Goldfinch, and Anselm. The finish was a good one between Gold Jacket and Respect, though the l ast-named faltered under pressure halfway up the straight. Gold Jacket running nome the victor by a length. Ans ?lin, who came speedily at the finish, and who did not get too good a run, was two lengths away third, followed by Rock Hinton. Goldfinch, Binger King, and Jean Darling, w:rh the rest of the field well back, .and Billy W lizz last. Atef the r ice E. s. Groat, driver of
I Bingen King, was hailed before the stewards and received a caution for interference with Florent. THE SADDLE EVENT In the Puriri Handicap, the mile saddle, Rockaway £362, Our Pirate £263, Ekoranei £IBB, and Great Audo £146, were the best supported. The race needs very little description, for, after lying handy behind Glenoc and Fungus, who were the early leaders, Rockaway who was accompanied by Our Pirate, moved up smartly, with three furlongs to be covered, and won with ridiculous ease by six lengths from Our Pira-te, who finished the same distance in front of Ben Zolock. Then came Ekoranei, Hohora, Glenoc, Percy Dillon, Fungus, Hal Chimes and Huon Grattan. PRESIDENT'S TO FLORALINE The two-mile trotting event, the President’s Handicap, saw Anseline carrv the most money, £ 663, with Sean Truibhais £484, Floraline £332, Kolmar £290, and Direct Action £237 also coming in for support. Sean Truibhais lost a lot of ground at the start, Tiki and Direct Action being the leaders. Mistakes on the part of the two mentioned gave Floraline a chance to make up ground, and he ranged alongside, though he mixed his gait in doing so. Sean Truibhais, further in the rear, was going well in patches, and Anseline was also inclined to wobble. Floraline had charge into the straight from Direct Action, and Anseline, and had sufficient left in reserve to withstand all challenges, and win by two lengths from Anseline, who was the same distance in front of Direct Action, and Sean Truibhais, Wild Nut, Kolmar Sebisca, and Sweet Memory followed. WIN ANTICIPATED Speed King, whose form was nothing of a recommendation, was first fancy for the Kerepeehi Handicap, carrying £4Ol, and Red Star £392, Horizon £353, and the bracketed trio—Moko Chief, Peter Grattan, and Moko Pete — £263. When they settled down. Red Star, Sidelight, Peter Grattan, Horizon, Speed King, Roamer, Aggie Bell, and Surveyor were all in a bunch, and they fought it out for the whole of the journey. During their progress along the back straight Glenoc and Golden Park collided, both pacers being pulled up. Red Star was in the van on rounding the bend into the stiaight from Horizon, Speed King, Aggie Bell, Surveyor, and Peter Grattan. Orce in sight of the judge, Speed King came through, to score byvfwo lengths from Red Star, who was a length in fnont of Sidelight, being followed by Surveyor, Roamer, Tiger Salve, Horizon, and Aggie Bell. HOT FAVOURITE DOWNED For the concluding event, the Kopu Handicap, Great Peter was a solid favourite, carrying £791, with Taipare £442, Admiral Lock £286, Mulwaree £l6, and Master Councillor £l5O fining supported accordingly. Great Peter and Bingen King were soon in front, but Admiral Lock, Taipare, and Liberate were close in behind them. Kingsclere moved up very fast as they completed half the distance, only to fade away again. Taipare had a slight lead from Great Peter into the straight, with Admiral Lock and Liberate bandy. In the run to the deciding line. Taipare drew away, to win by haM a length from Admiral Lock, who finished a length in front of Great Peter, followed home by Liberate, Heather Girl, Rua Pere, Bingen King, and Master Councillor.
