SICK OF THE SEA

DESERTER FINED £5 Ships and the sea must have lost their fascination for William Thomas, a young seaman, who pleaded guilty in Police Court this morning, to deserting the s.s. Rimutaka at New Plymouth, on February 19. It was said that Thomas was a sober, steady-going man and had been working on the wharf at Auckland for the last fortnight. “ I don’t want to send you to prison, as you’d lose your employment ” said the magistrate as he fined Thomas £5, in default 14 days.
