EPSOM WIN

PENNANT BOWLING

A KEEN FINAL

THE PLAY DESCRIBED

Keen and interesting play marked the final of the Auckland bowling pennant competition on Saturday between Rocky Nook and Epsom. This competition is designed to find the club in Auckland which has the strongest all-round playing ability.

(By Jack High.) From the commencement of the contest in November last, enthusiasm of the participants ran to the very highest. The possibility of bringing honours to the respective clubs was fully exploited. Many a fine exhibition of bowling was played and jnany a grim battle was fought. It was a ereat test of skill for all the clubs. It reflects therefore great credit on the Epsom Club that it should come through the victor. Incidentally, one of the finest features of this tournament is its educational value from the point of view of the average player. It provides a splendid opportunity for the rank and file player to meet front rank players of other clubs, which gives a practical first-hand working knowledge of the various methods of play adopted. This contest is possibly the best place where he can obtain this very necessary experience. The player who follows a tournament from the bank certainly cannot get experience from there. He must get right into the game. THE GREENS It is unfortunate that the final of this important contest could not be played on a neutral green and that it had to be distributed between the two greens, Epsom and Rocky Nook. It will be remembered that when Epsom met Rocky Nook in the final of this competition three years ago, Epsom lost all their games on the Rocky Nook green. It was then credited that this green was unplayable. However its condition has vastly improved since then: although It cannot be claimed with any degree of accuracy that it ranks as a firstclass playing surface. The Epsom green, on the other hand, is playing quite well, and as a tribute to its improvement this year, it was chosen for the finals of the Christmas Tournament. However the Centre Executive went fully into this matter and found that it was impossible to obtain the necessary ten rinks from any one club in the city, and the circumstance had therefore to be tolerated. The first point to be taken into consideration is that Epsom’s quota for this tournament was 14 rinks against Rocky Nook’s 10. The procedure adopted by the Centre Executive to meet with this contingency was that Epsom was required v> send in their full 14 selected teams. The ten rinks were then drawn for play from the foqrteen. Some misconception is prevalent on this point, ©pinions were expressed in some quarters that Epsom was allowed to concentrate the strength of their fourteen rinks into ten and thereby gain an advantage. This is not so. The 10 teams played were drawn from fourteen sent in irrespective of their strength. A glance at the rules w'ill establish the fact that this must be done. No added advantage can be attributed to Epsom in respect to this. As a matter of fact the skips that were eliminated were some of the most powerful. They were Messrs Gratton, Tanner, G. Inglis and the president. E. F. Jones. THE GAME The twenty teams met as follows: Rocky Nook skips first—Jury, v. Boyne, Clark v. George, Pearce v. Wilkinson, Wakerley v. de Launey ,H. Jenkin v. Jervi:; Wright, on Epsom; Chapman v. Fcubister, French v. Dunlop, Keatley v. Jenkin, Roylance ▼. Gosling, Bonskill v. Richmond. The Rocky Nook players are credited with being a strong fighting club. A glance at their skips fully Justifies this contention as they include the present singles champion ©f New Zealand. H. Clarke; E. Jury, a past New Zealand champion skip; and Keatley and Wakerley, two past champion of champions. Epsom on the other hand is not so powerful on the skipper’s end. Although it may be advanced that Wilkinson and do Launey are two front rank players. E. J. Wilkinson’s fine effort in the recent champion of champions contest was most creditable. It might reasonably bo- predicted that Auckland will see this player carrying off some of our biggest events in tlio hear future.

DETAILS OF PLAY In the game Jury v. Boyne the latter played a most excellent game. He got a handsome lead of five before Jury started, and on the 17th head notched a splendid seven. Jury fought hard and caught within three at the afternoon tea adjournment, but ended down 18—24. In the match Clarke v. George, George got ahead 31-7 at half-time. Clarke had to speuculate for tall scoring, and failed to be successful and ended down 14—24. Pearce v. Wilkinson. This was a run-away match in Wilkinson’s favour. Half-time saw the score 16 —4. Pearce slightly improved his position in the latter half of the game, but ended down 14—25. Jenkin v. Jervis Wright. This game was a splendid win for the Rocky Nook champion. It was not until the seventh head that Rocky Nook scored. Jenkin played an uphill fight and got away only on the last two heads. 22 —17. Wakerley v. de Launey. Wakerley got a lead of seven before de Launey started. He retained it and the game ended 25 —14. Chapman v. Foubister. Chapman got away well and ended 22 —17. Finch v. Dunlop. Finch maintained a lead of three at half-time and ended 22 —12. Keatley v. Jenkin. Keatley lost five by half-time and did not recover in the second half, ending 20— Roylance v. Gosling. Roylance lost 16 by half-time and reduced by four on the second half, ending 16 —28. Bouskill v. Richmond. The old Rocky .Nook skip played well against the popular Epsom player. It was very friendly: 10 each at half-time, and 16 each at the finish. The totals were: Rocky Nook 45 games, Epsom f>l- games. The total points are. Rocky Nook 189, Epsom 192. A BIG SUCCESS Altogether the tournament has been an unqualified success. The Auckland Centre is to be heartily congratulated on its management. The untiring work of this body is a matter that merits wide congratulation. . The Rocky Nook Club has won this event no less than four times previously. The Epsom Club on their part have been runners-up once before. That the Epsom Club should win the final by defeating such old veterans as Rocky Nook is a clear indication of the exceedingly high merit of their play.
