FAMILY ENDOWMENT
W.C.T.U. PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS REFORMS COMMENDED The president’s annual address was given at the convention of the New Zealand Women’s Christian Temperance Union yesterday in the Unity Hall. The president, Mrs. T. E. Taylor, of Christchurch, appealed to the women of New Zealand to extend their mental outlook and take an active interest in world events. Mrs. Taylor observed that many long overdue reforms for the benefit of women and children in New Zealand had been made. Notable among these was the appointment of women justices of the peace. The Family Endowment Act, in Mrs. Taylor’s opinion, could not be regarded as a. real proposal for either family or motherhood endowment, in the true feminist sense, nor could the allowance of 2s a week for each child exceeding two in a family be considered satisfactory. Yet the Bill contained commendable principles. The president commended the work that had been done in regard to mental hospital reforms, child welfare and Children’s Courts. The result of the last prohibition poll showed that much educational work remained to be done if prohibition was to be carried. The convention was also addressed by Mr. C. R. Edmond, general secretary of the New Zealand Alliance. To-day the delegates are being taken for a motor tour of the city, arranged by the Auckland branch of the union.
