ROAD PROBLEM
WAITEMATA POSITION URGENT NEED FOR REPAIR Reporting on the state of the Waitemata County Council’s roads at the meeting yesterday, the engineer stated that practically all the water-bound macadamised roads in the county were laid down in a most primitive manner with metal 9ft. in width and approximately 6in. in thickness. “ The thickness of the metal in many cases is now only two or three inches, in some cases less. These roads are quite incapable of carrying the pre-sent-day heavj r and fast-moving traffic, and consequently the amount of money available for maintenance purposes is not sufficient to keep the roads in repair. Many roads are deteriorating very rapidly, and unless ways and means of upkeep are provided will become completely destroyed.” The engineer suggested that the metal should be widened to about 16ft. and then surfaced with metal chips. He added that the cost of this class of construction was probably more than could be provided for, but it was absolutely necessary.
