RACING
(By “EARLY BIRD Bright Knight Re-handicapped Mr. McManemin has put Bright Knight up 31b., consequent upon his win at Bulls, in his engagement in the Waiharera Handicap at Whangarei next Thursday, making his weight now 8.3. Quite Expected If one may judge from the indications, the success of Hipo in the principal event at Bulls yesterday was fully anticipated in circles far removed from the scene of operations. Hipo is getting up in years now, but he retains some of his pace and this season he has scored twice. This horse was responsible for landing a big coup when he captured the Auckland Easter Handicap three years ago. Northerners in the South Quite a number of ex-North Island horses figured at this week’s meeting of the Oamaru Club. Mime scored the first day, but failing to leave the mark with his field yesterday cost him a race. Spode was a runner in the same event and according to the report of the race it is evident that she possesses her old speed, for she was the pacemaker in each of her two starts. Spode was a useful two-year-old when raced by Mr. Vivian Riddiford, but it is evident that she takes some getting right. Smart Hack Kept Going No fault can be found with Town Guard’s condition and the big chestnut is moving along in pleasing style. Preparing for Jumping Events Archibald, a noted hard puller, is receiving plenty of attention and jumping events later on may find him once more in evidence.
Off to Whangarei R. E. Brown intends leaving early next week to be present at the Wai-papakauri-Whangarei meetings. His team will comprise War Officer, Abbey Day, Rina Maunga and Star Comet. En Route to Whangarei E. George is expected to arrive from New Plymouth to-morrow morning with Te Monanui, Jazz Baby, Mint Leaf and Oration and will go on to the Waipapakauri-Whangarei meetings.
Coming Along Nicely Star Comet has gone on the right way since he won the Waiuku Welter Handicap at the Franklin meeting and should strip very fit in his future engagements. He has been working well on the tracks in view of the Whangarei meeting. On the Up Grade
Respirator, who was returned a winner at the Franklin meeting, has been galloping freely at Ellerslie, though he is somewhat light in condition. It is hardly likely that Respirator will go out as neglected in the betting as he was at Franklin in such events as he will tackle from now on, for he has the appearance of a hack likely to be seen to better advantage with racing. Jockeys' Engagements at Tauranga H. Dulieu has been engaged to ride Gold Dot and Dutchie at the Bay of Plenty meeting to-morrow. R. McTavish rides Te Rangi, Best Boy, The Author and Clockwork. The apprentice G. Forbes will have the mount on Haerera and Pekatalii. S. Henderson pilots Right and Left, Master Mind and Acushla. An Unlikely Starter Ring the Bell is an unlikely starter at the Bay of Plenty meeting tomorrow, but Master Mind, Clockwork, Passionate, Right and Left and Haerera leave to-night. Acushla and Waitekohe are already at Tauranga, having left earlier in the week. Went Fairly Fast A good gallop was registered at Ellerslie this morning when Star Comet and Sleepy Sol were associated over seven furlongs on the course proper, two trestles out. The track was on the soft side and they ran the distance in 1.34 1-5. Both Star Comet and Sleepy Sol are likely to compete at the Whangarei meetings next week. Interesting Try-outs W'ar Officer finished in front of Abbey Day when extended over five furlongs on the course proper at Ellerslie this morning, running the distance in 1.0 3-5. Rina Maunga, over the same journey, comfortably defeated Segment, who was running wide out, and taking 1.7. Segment knocked himself, which may have made him falter. Haerera, who is engaged at the Bay of Plenty Meeting to-morrow, was sent along alone over six furlongs, giving a good display. Moving Along Well Passionate’s work at Ellerslie has not left room for complaint, for the chestnut gelding has been moving attractively. t Encouraging the Master Mind With numerous fast work-outs registered against him it is always likely that Master Mind will reproduce that form in a race, in which event he may be among the place-getters. Master Mind will be afforded a chance at Tauranga to-morrow, and with a vigorous horseman like S. Henderson in the saddle may perform in a manner lkely to encourage his owner to take him further afield. A Good Pair
Lomint and Chamour are a pair anyone would be pleased to have in their back yard. This morning at Ellerslie both stepped out briskly in a strong gallop on the sand. In Strong Work Charlady is not allowed to remain idle and J. W T illiamson, though not sending her along fast, is subjecting the mare to strong work. Notes From Whangarei Aurumavis has arrived at Whangarei in charge of J. Armstrong. This mare looks very well. C. J. Wyatt will arrive at WTiangarei on Monday with Firesight, Potera, Fiery Lad and Star Love. Harry Weston, of Dargaville, will arrive at Whangarei early next week with Master Arch, Dead Sweet, Bright Dawn and Miss Lucullus. E. K. Plaisted, who was recently granted a trainer’s license, has Just Quietly, Royal Seagull and Houhori in hand. Tresor, owned by Mr. F. W. Stonex, who has until recently been hacked about his owner’s farm at Whatitiri, has been taken in hand by T. Bezar. Tresor will contest the local race on each day of the meeting. Bezar will also bring Ulingar and Quaestor. Royal Seagull, a two-year-old by Royql Stag —Seabar, is owned by Mr. G. Stewart, of Whangarei. Houhori is owned by Air. Ross Nelson and is a five-year-old gelding by Mullingar—Kilbeggan. Sea Gaze, nominated for the Maiden, is owned by Mr. P. G. Martin. Ruawai has been added to the list since last spring and is expected to arrive on Monday, _ -
Adjure has made an appearance on the local track and is getting through serviceable tasks. Adjure is owned and trained by F. E. Lewis at Utukdra. W. Donaldson’s contingent, comprising Adjuster, Antrim Boy, Lady Arch, Thurnrosae, Wee Marble and Young Mischief are all going well. Some of those mentioned should get among the money next week. E. George, of New Plymouth, has booked accommodation for four horses, H. Eva, Te Aroha, has reserved two boxes, C. Norgrove one (Prncess Ronnie), and H. F. Hastedt The handicapper had a task allotted him when Delightment was entered for the County Handicap. His impost. IL9, makes some of the others lower
