“RAISING THE ROOF”

OLD CUSTOM REVIVED LUNCH AT DILWORTH BUILDING “Raising the roof” in the 13th century was a custom very much in vogue when the roof of a building had been completed. During the last century the term has deteriorated. “Raising the roof” smacks of convivial parties and probably a good deal of singing, both in and out of tune. ' However, the real old custom of “Raising the roof” was in its truest sense yesterday at the Dilworth Building, when 120 workmen who have been employed about the building were entertained by the Dilworth Trust Board. Archdeacon G. Mac Murray, chairman of the trust, presided and expressed his appreciation of the co-operation among the workers since the foundations were begun in August, 1925. He spoke of the properties at Remuera and in the city which had been entrusted to the care of the Trust Board by the late Mr. Dilworth. One of the joint architects, Mr. R. Ford, spoke of the old custom of “Raising the roof” and expressed his thanks for the co-operation which had been displayed in completing the buildSpeeches were also made by Mr. J. Fletcher, on behalf of the contractors, and Mr. J. Bierre, the foreman.
