OAMARU RACES
FRESCO’S CUP
RAPIER DEVELOPS SPRINTING ABILITY
(Special to THE SUN.)
OAMARU. Wednesday
The opening day of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was held before a moderate attendance. Light rain set in early in the morning and continued practically throughout the day, and just prior to the running of the last race there was a deluge.
The Hurdle race was run in heavy rain, and Oriflamb was made a much better favourite than Kaikahu. Hard Prince, Oriflamb, Bonatic and Atapo were the leaders for six furlongs. Atapo, Hard Prince, Bonomel and Oriflamb was the order at the last fence, and ridden right out Atapo stayed on to beat Bonomel by two lengths, with Hard Prince three lengths off third, followed by Bonatic, Kaikahu and Guncase.
In the Novice Handicap Luthy was sent out just a little better favourite than Tripaway. Miss March was left, and Tripaway and Cupid’s Dart at once shot out to the front, and after running a couple of furlongs were eight lengths clear of a bunched field. Halfway up the hill Tripaway shook off Cupid’s Dart and ran home a com-' fortable winner from Cupid’s Dart by two lengths, Luthy was half a length further back third, and Cynelli, Lady Tractor and Craigmore next. Fresco Strikes Form In the North Otago Cup the Wingatui owned Miss Winkie was installed favourite. From a splendid start Chickwheat and Miss Winkie showed out. At the end of two furlongs Mountain Lion and Chickwheat were just clear of Miss Winkie and Receipt, Vaward being at the rear of the field. A furlong further on Receipt ranged alongside of the leaders, and Fresco had moved up. ' Chickwheat was still in charge when heads were turned for home, but he faded away when the pressure was applied. Vaward put in a good run on the outer and was almost on terms with the leaders at the distance post, but he could not sustain his effort. In a punishing finish Fresco outstayed Receipt and won by a head, Vaward being three lengths away third. Miss Winkie failed to race up to tions, and was in fifth position at the finish. Chickwheat had every chance. Scratchings were numerous in the Wakaura Handicap. Gay Sonnet was installed favourite and never gave her supporters any cause for anxiety, as she wc-.t to the front soon after the start and was never fully extended. When the barrier was released Spode and Gay Sonnet were the first to become prominent. At the entrance to the straight Spode dropped out, and Brightling improved his positiou. Galloping resolutely, the leader was never troubled, and she maintained her advantage to the post. Brightling just beat Lucy Locket for second, Peho being about two lengths further away. Hot Favourite Scores , Mime was backed down to a short price in the Anniversary Handicap. , Overhaul, and Mime at once shot to the front, but were soon supplanted by Goldtown, who led for half the journey. Mime and Courtly Rose here joined the leader, with Overhaul close up. Mime came away when they straightened up and went on to win comfortably by two lengths from Fairy Herald, who came from a long way back over the last two furlongs. All British got up in time to beat Courtly Rose for third money. The Moeraki Handicap was contested by a field of five. It was a hundred yards before Tholomon and Roman Archer singled themselves out, and Roman Archer led into the straight, but was closely followed by Wingatui and Tholomon. Battle Colours put in a good run and was in charge.at the distance post, but he failed to withstand a late challenge by Wingatui and Tholomon. Wingatui won all out by a length from Tholomon, Battle Colours being a neck away third. Moratorium was next. Battle Colours was favourite, and better placed in the early stages would have won. Rapier Arrives The field in the Flying Handicap was reduced to seven runners. Backers went solidly for Rapier, and he wound up a short-priced favourite. Lava acted as pacemaker, Eaton Bells, Booster and Gold Brick following at intervals. At the end of two furlongs Rapier was well in the rear and his supporters were not happy. Lava continued to set the pace until heads were turned for home, where Eaton Bells and Booster were hot in pursuit. Rapier had also made up a lot of ground, and his colours were prominent on the outside of the field. Lava was the first to give in, and Eaton Bells looked a likely winner, but Emerson got to work on the favourite and in a ding-dong finish Rapier wore Eaton Bells down and won by a length. Booster was close up third, and then came Solrose and Gold Brick.
