AUCKLAND’S WATER
COMMISSION TO SIT INVESTIGATING THE SOURCES The commission which is to inquire into the necessity or expediency of supplementing the Auckland metropolitan water supply is to commence its sittings at the Auckland Hospital Board’s offices next Monday. The members of the commission will assemble at 11 o’clock when the order of business will be determined. It is likely that, providing the weather conditions are suitable, the commission will decide to inspect the present and suggested sources of supply before hearing expert and other evidence on the points raised by the order of reference.
The commission comprises Mr. A. W. Blair, solicitor, of Wellington, who will be chairman, Mr. A. J. Baker, Public Works engineer, of Wellington, and Mr. A. D. Dobson, civil engineer, of Christchurch. The commission will inquire into and report upon the provision of water supplies for Auckland city and suburbs adequate for the needs of the population of the area 40 years hence. In the event of the present supplies being considered inadequate the commission is to determine whether they should be augmented or replaced by an extension of the existing catchment areas, an extension of the existing waterworks, the adoption of new sources of supply and in particular the obtaining of a supply from the Waikato River or Lake Taupo. Other points which the commission will have to consider will be methods of distribution and the hygienic conditions of present supplies.
