On the morning of the day fixed for the hearing of his wife’s petition for divorce on the grounds of drunkenness and cruelty, Jacob Stiefel shot his wife, a daughter aged four, a son aged two, and- two sons of a previous marriage aged seven and eight. He then committed suicide. All the victims are dead except the daughter, who is seriously ill.

A Record Flight.—The German aviator Schnabele, who recently flew for 16 hours at Dessau, has now set up a new record. He flew for 22 hours continuously, and covered 1,690 miles while in the air.
