TARDY MOTORISTS
SLOW REGISTRATION PLATES ANI) LICENCES Both the postal authorities, who are issuing the new motor-car number plates, and the traffic office of the City Council, which is issuing driving licences for the year commencing April 1, made special provisions for dealing with applications from motorists for renewals, and both organisations have been very disappointed with the small number of applications. The inevitable result will be a great deal of congestion at Wellesley Street Post Office and the Traffic Office next week, and motorists will have only themselves to blame for any inconvenience and delay that will occur. The position this morning was that the post office had issued plates for approximately 5,0U0 motor vehicles, and expects to reach the 5,500 mark to-day. This leaves without plates about 6,500 vehicles, a percentage of which will probably be laid up for the winter and re-registered in the spring. The traffic office has only been called on to issue about 3,000 driving licences out of a total of 14,000.
The indications are that there will be a rush next week. In view of the provisions made and not taken advantage of the anticipation is that no latitude will be shown to motorists who make an appearance on Friday week with black and white plates, or driving licences that expired the previous night.
The postal authorities particularly ask that firms with several vehicles should make their applications : for plates now. Plates and receipts will be prepared and may be picked up and paid for later in the month.
