Chief Detective Lewis said the accused was employed by the tirm from which the goods had been stolen. Hav • ing reason to think that there waii something wrong, the firm obtained a statement from Garlick, who, according to his own admission, had been supplying the goods to other parties, who were not charged owing to th 3 action of the firm in not placing ths matter immediately in the hands of ths police. Mr Amodeo said some men had approached Garlick to see whether they could have goods without their being entered up. Accused later fell a victim to temptation, and supplied a considerable quantity of goods, getting about £ls as his share of the spoi:. Counsel asked for suppression of Garlick’s name. The Magistrate: If it is generally known that the courts throughout New Zealand are concealing names of people who commit systematic robberies it is bound to encourage crime. Garlick was convicted and placed on probation for 18 months. The magistrate did not consider it advisable to make an order suppressing the name.
