THE LATE MR. W. E. AGAR.

-We deeply regret having to record'in I this issue the death of Mr. W. E. Agar. late Editor of this journal. Mr, Agar ' was a native of Essex, England, but. at an early age left the Old Country with his parents for New South Wales. In that colony he served an apprenticeship to the trade of printer, and, shortly after becoming a journeyman, obtained an ap- . pointraent on the typographical stall of j the Fiji Times. This position he occupied until the beginning of 1877, whoa he left j Fiji for this town for the purpose of , establishing the Samoa Times. Never ; robust, the work in connection with the ; conduct of a journal in a tropical cliro.ito such an this, soon told on the constitution of tho deceased gentleman, and for some time ■ prior to May last ho onjoyed but feeble ' health. In the montk just named ho concluded to try the effect of a change of climate, and with that object proceeded to Fiji, and from thenoo to Auckland! Tho trip, however, did not prove beneficial, and Mr. Agar returned to.' this placo on the 28th of September last. Shortly afterwards his illness (consumption) assumed alarming proportions, and ■on "Saturday night he closed his earthly career at the early age of 29. It was no light task that Mr. Agar attempted when he took upon himself to establish a journal in this remote community, where thoie are so many conflicting interests, and where ono has to walk warily if he would avoid offending national or other susceptibilities, and that the Samoa Times still exists is, we think, a monument to the tact and judgment of him of whom we pen these lines. Fulsome praise, particularly of the dead, is detestable, but we cannot close this notice without recording that Mr. Agar during his residonce here gained the respect of all classes of tho community, and that his early death is a loss to this plaoe.
