TAXPAYER'S MEETING.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE SAMOA TIMES. Silt,—The resolutions proposed at this mooting hud ltt> heartiest sympathy, but I regret that the object aimed at should have been, in u measure, marred by the way in which the resolutions were shuffled over, and by the inoidinato hasto whioli characterised the whole proceedings of the evening. Some misunderstanding existed, and still exists, ns to who wore the originators of the meeting, and as to its object j and as this misunderstanding has been made OUpitaJ of by n few demagogues, whom wo htv.o unhappily in our midst, ] desire, through your columns, to stu'c what lias come to my knowledge of t! o mutter, with the hopo that it may remove some of the misapprehensions now current in regard to the meeting. The officers of lb,. Municipality, who manlier ill which tin

being treated by the Board, and having come to the conclusion that under existing circumstances it was impossible for them to carry out the wishes of the public, determined to resign. As they were, however, averse to taking this extreme step without consulting the wishes of their constituents, anil ns they believed that some action on the part of the people might induce the Board to do justice, (which isall that is claimed,) they, through the resolutions, stated the situation and what they desired if they were to continue to retain office. The various officers interested concluded to resign at once if the meeting did not see fit to adopt their view of the position ; happily it did, and this has considerably strengthened the hands of the representatives of the people who now await the decision of the Board before taking any further action. I am, &c., Vox Populi. Matafele, 25th February, 1880.
