THE SAMOA TIMES. "Sworn to no Master, of no Sect am I." SATURDAY, MAY 24, 1879.
js the sixtieth anniversary of the jn«lb of Victoria the Queen of England, ' *ud if the live* till the 38th of next month she will have concluded the fortyfirst year of her reign. She sucoeeded to the throne on June 80th, 1837, but was not crowned for a year after. We feel that ao much has already been written, said and sung of the many virtue* of England's much-loved Queen, that there is nothing left for us. In fact anything that we might say. upon that head would be but a very imperfect repetition of an oft-told tale. As the idolised sovereign of England, as a fond and loving mother, and as a true woman, who can feel and sympathise for those of her sex who have met with misfortunes, and as one to whom cries for help are never raised in vain, she is known, respected and honoured in all part* of the world. Her health, weareeorry to say, hat not been very robust of late. The recent affliction which she has undergone in the death of her daughter Prinoest Alios is said to have given her a very eevere shook. In consequence of her having been very much attached to Princess Alice, fear* .art-en-tertained in aome quarter* that the shock may prov* disastrous to Her jfejwty, but we sincerely hope that the** fear* may prove to he ill-founded, and that England will be (pared her noble Queen for several years to couie yet. Her reign ha* been a long one, a useful one, and aj prosperous ono. Her subject* an in all |
parts of the world, and upon the dominion over which ah* awayi her sceptre the eon never seta. Mil lions of voice* to-day will about ■ God save the Queen," and many a bumper will be drank to her health. It may be interesting to know that of all the sovereigns who have reigned npon the British throne, Queen Victoria's reign at present ranks fifth longest George 111. reigned the longest, nearly sixty years, from 1760 to 1820. . During the latter years he was insane, and reigned but did not rule. Henry 111. reigned fifty-six years, from 1216 to 1272. Edward 111. reigned fifty years, from 1527 to 1378. Queen Elixabet a reigned fortyfive years, from 1558 to 1603, and Queen Victoria is now in the forty-first year of her reign, which has been one of the most peaceful since the day when Egbert, the first Zing of all England, ascended the throne in the year 827. We feel certain that all in Samoa, irrespective of nationality, will join us to-day in saying God save Queen Victoria.
