NEWS FROM SAVAGE ISLAND.

- The hurrioane uf Marcli 16th last, which caused si'ch terrible havoc at Samoa, also did great damage at Savage or Niue Island, of the Tongan Group. By advices from Captain Ross, of the schooner Olive, we learn that no less than 675 houses, threechurches, and two aohoolhouaes were destroyed, besides about 2000 cocoanut trees. Mr. F. E. Lawes, the missionary of the London Missionary Society, stationed at Alofi, Niue, writes under date January 25, that on December 29 a large quantity of wreckage consisting of a mast, cabin doors, etc., had come ashore on the island. On January 18 several oars, a ladder, and two shntters (probably hatch • covers) were picked up, one of the latter beiug maaked " S, starboard bottom end No, 1." A lifeboat with the word " China" upon it and a portion of a boat waa also thrown on the reefs by the waves. This discovery of the extensive wreckage conclusively points to the destruction of some large vessel, which will probably be the Suakiin, bound from Newcastle to San Francisco, which has been missing for some time, and one of whose boats drifted ashore at Aitutaki in January last. The Suakiin was an iron vessel of 1618 tons, and in command of Captain Seabrook.—N.Z. Herald.
