Messrs Burnt (president) and Trethowan, a member of the executive oi the Farmers’ and Settlers’ Association, have been appointed to the Legislative Council. As the outcome of the recent 1.W.1h trials, the Crimes Prevention Bill, which provides heavy penalties lor inciting to crime, was read for the .'irst time in the Assembly.

The Totalisator Bill provides that the Government takes seven-tenths and the'clubs tbree-tentbs of the 11) per cent, deducted. A deputation from the Anglican Synod waited on the Minister for Education, protesting against the legalisation of the totalisator and quoting in support the enormous increase of betting in New Zealand and other States sijioas the introduction of the tote. Their arguments failed to convince the Minister.
