LOCAL AND GENERAL.
No less than 32 entries have been , received for the juvenile judging at the Show. The entries all-round exceed those.of last year. Most of the "D" Company 11th Regiment Taranaki Rifles are now in possession of their new uniforms, i winch greatb' add to their appearijiante. Any surplus uniforms will be I sent; out, to .the outlying units of this i Company. Sergeant-Major Mahoney i reports that the quality of the uniforms is exceptionally good. ! The Town Clerk (Mr P. Skoglund) {has received a letter from the Minister of Railw'ays (Hon. W. H. Herries) relative to the complaint by the Council as to the yarding and shipment of live stock, stating that at present he could not undertake the concede to the Council's request and prowar. With regard to lighting the stock yard, it had been decided to ac- j eept to the Council's request and provide a light. A scheme for the improvement of drafting facilities with a separate pig yard had been ap- ' roved. As to the inadequate supply ( of waggons in the busy season, the , [ orders were generally in excess of the 1 available rolling stock, and it would ( 'not be justifiable to have a number of Waggons idle at Stratford. I'he'fe'w&s ?l a u li animated scene at the Hall to-day when Mrs J. B. Hihe, in the presence of a large gathering, including the Vicar (Hev. C. W. Howard) and other workers, j opened the Sale of Work in connection j with Holy Trinity Church. In an ap- j proprite speech, Mrs Hine declared j the gala open, and expressed the. wish . for an encouraging result. All the | stalls were prettily arranged, apart from the goods which they contained, and they highly reflected credit on the various stall-holders, who were as I follows:—Produce, Mesdames A. E\ , : Grant, Kivell, T. C. Fookes, and C. j I Penn; jumble stall and bran tub, Mrs 'and the Misses Middleton and Mrs C. ; Martin; sweets, Mrs Hi. K. Abraham, j Miss Cravvshaw and Miss Hlartley; ! flowers, Mesdames Prentis and H. Ashton and Miss Wilson ; plain work, Mesdames Hugh Good and W. H. H. I ■ Young; fancy work, Mrs Crawshaw i and Mrs Hartley; refreshments, Mesdames Freer, Dixon, Thorpe, Shields and Oliver, and other lady assistants. During the afternoon, there were a large number of customers, and as the Hall will be open until 10 o'clock tonight, the various attractions are i sure to diaw many more supporters.
