He is the eldest son of the late Archduke Francis Charles (who stood next to the previous Emperor in the legal order of succession, and who died on March 8, 1878) and of the Princess Sophia. His reign has been a long and troubled one and little good of him can bo fairly recorded. The Emperor’s only son. the Clown Prince .Rudolph, having committed suicide on January 28, 1889, the Emperor’s brother, the Archduke Charles Louis, became heir, hut he relinquished his rights of succession in favour of his son, (he Archduke Francis Ferdinand, who was assassinated at Sarajevo, in Bosnia, which, together with Herzegovina, was annexed to Austria about throe years ago.
