As instancing the world-wide scarcity of all kinds of paper, a Haweru hardware firm which imports extensively, mentions that for some time past glassware from a well-known firm of manufacturers in New York, has been wrapped for packing purposes in what are apparently duplicate copies of old letters, railway way hills, etc., instead of the paper ordinarily used for such purposes under normal circumstances. The .Star adds: If such economies are necessary in regard to inferior qualities of paper, it would apear likely that conditions affecting higher grades must be even more acute.
The Christcburcb police usually prepare for a busy time when the Carnival Week falls due, but this year proved to be the "quietest" holiday, from a police point of view, experienced for many years. The cases of drunkenness were very small, considering the circumstances, and pickpockets and other rogues practically ceased from troubling. The following statistics show the cases brought up at the Magistrate's Court during Carnival Week for the past three years:—Drunkenness 1914, 18; 1915. 43; 1916, 18. Other offences 1914, 24 ; 1915, 24 ; 1916, 5. Totals: 72, 67, 23. The smallness of the 4916 figures constitutes a record at the Court for Carnival Week during recent rears.

Dawson Madill. on behalf of the workers, presented her with a handsome worked stool as a slight token of appreciation of her efforts. Mr Stewart briefly thanked all for the gift and the sp ; rii which prompted it- In every way the bazaar was most successful, and as the combined workers helped each oiher in their respective departments, it largely conduced to the enjoyment of the occasion.
